About Us

The Neighbour Centre is an establishment of the Edmonton Do Likewise Society – a charitable organization founded in 2009 to address the needs of neighbours experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Since that time there has been a steady increase in the numbers of individuals that come to the centre in search of support, encouragement, and hope – all within a friendly and welcoming environment.

Mission

We fight poverty by delivering essential programs and services to neighbours experiencing homelessness and poverty. We provide a safe place where individuals can take critical steps towards building, and sustaining, a healthy life.

Vision

A life-giving community where neighbours work together to realize their potential.

Philosophy of Service

We are all neighbours, bound by a common desire to live connected to one another in community: Some neighbours serve the organization as a staff, others support the organization as donors – making financial gifts. Some act as volunteers and partners, while others access the services offered at the Centre.  We are all neighbours and, through our involvement at the Centre, we are all taking steps to transform our lives.

Approach to Services

We use a strengths-based, client-centered approach – providing ongoing support that engages neighbours to take part in their journey towards building a health life. At the Centre, neighbours are invited into a network of healthy and supportive relationships that encourages self-respect, personal growth, and the opportunity to utilize their talents and passions to better our community.

Board of Directors

The Neighbour Centre is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by the membership of the Edmonton Do Likewise Society. To learn more about the Board of Directors please contact us as at  or (780) 439-5216.

Good Neighbour Awards

The Good Neighbour Award was established to recognize extraordinary neighbours and their leadership within our community. The award honours individuals, organizations, or businesses that have invested their time and resources to further our vibrant community.

At the Year in Review Celebration & AGM in October, we recognized the following 2015 winners – whose dedication has helped transform lives:

  • Don Gerke, Founding Board Member and Advocate
  • Evelyn Swanson, Volunteer Team Lead of The Dinner Club
  • Old Strathcona Business Association, Founding Partner of Old Strathcona Street Clean program
